How a holiday made me reevaluate my relationship with the internet (again.)
For the last two weeks, I've been on holiday (or a vacation, if you're a red-blooded American.) I took my sketchbook along with me, as I believed I would use this time to disconnect from the craziness of the world. I mean, I didn't have much choice. I didn't have any wifi.
Well, for a couple of days I didn't.
I honestly struggled being without the internet. I felt flaky and bored. I gave in and paid for Wifi. Oh I definably paid, I paid a lot. Now, I felt like I wasted money on something I really didn't need.
Whilst I wanted to change my relationship with the internet before, this experience has reinforced that desire even more. I don't want to feel dependent on it to cope with stress. Not only that, I feel it impacts my willingness to create art.
Even though I enjoy drawing/painting, it can be so bloody difficult. Especially when you're working on a passion project, or anything you truly care about. You have this amazing idea in your head and want it to work out well, and the fear of it going kaput is too much. Your perfectionism is overpowering. In the end, it's easier to scroll on Twitter, Tumblr, etc, or watch a bunch of art YouTubers where you feel like you doing something productive, just because they talk about how much money they make or something IDK.
This is why I'm here. Making a website from scratch (which I NEVER thought I could do!), posting to tumblr, writing this blog, and such.I'm looking for alternative ways of sharing my art, instead of using platforms run by rich twats, tech bros, and greedy corporations where you and your attention span are the products.
Okay, My emotion dumping session is over
To be fair, I did do art whilst on holiday. I even bought a new sketchbook whilst aborad! (which I accidentally left behind and lost.)
Luckily, I have some work I did in my other sketchbook to show! Including some designs for this site.
After we got back and I received some birthday money, I bought a couple of courses from Domestika I've been looking at. Here some studies/practice drawings from one of the illustration courses.
